James Whale, 1889 yılında doğmuş olmakla mustarip fakir bir ingiliz gay çocuğudur cümlesiyle acıtasyonun tavanına ulaştırarak başlıyorum. Bir an cümle kurarken kahroldum... Neyse; Kendileri yönettiği özellikle Frankenstein, The Invisible Man ve Bride of Frankenstein adlı üç kült korku filmiyle bilinmektedir. Türün temelini oluşturan bu filmler, yarattığı estetiksel açıdan mükemmel canavar figürleri, tiyatro yönetmenliğinden geldiği için filmlerin zemininde yatan dramatik kökler, filmleri 80 yıl sonra bile izlenir durumdadır. Bu yüzden türün yön almasında önemli bir eli olan James Whale, Canavarların Tanrısı lakabını tümüyle hakketmektedir. Yıl 1957'de depresyona girmiş sonra intihar etmiştir. Ve şu notu bırkamış; " Gelecek sadece yaşlılık, hastalık ve acı ihtiva ediyor.... Huzura kavuşmam lazım ve yalnızca tek yolu var..."

James Whale, who grew up poor in an English mining town, learned to put on plays in a World War I German prison camp. Postwar theatre work took him to the London stage, then Broadway, then a contract with Paramount, as dialog director for Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels (1930). He began his contribution to the horror film genre with his move to Universal, directing Boris Karloff in Frankenstein (1931), notable for its sympathetic presentation of the monster, and The Invisible Man (1933) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935), both notable for the humor he injected into horror. As horror movies lost favor, he retreated to a more private and hedonistic life including painting and all-male pool parties, at one point separating from his longtime lover David Lewis, suffering several strokes, finally committing suicide by drowning in his pool (he was afraid of water). His suicide note, to Lewis, read "The future is just old age and illness and pain.... I must have peace and this is the only way".

In the first half of the 1990’s, on those days when intense skirmish between the kurdish guerillas and the turkish government took place, a handful of young journalists were struggling to proclaim the ongoing violations of human rights to the world. On those days of increasing pressure, the office staff fights both to survive and to reveal the facts. Journalism is no longer a profession, but a a matter of life or death for them. the English word was used in the original title of the film because of the double meaning of the word, both describing the work done and the pressure on the journalists.

Dönemin askeri yetkilileri cezaevini bir “askeri okul” olarak nitelerken tutuklular o dönemi “vahşet yılları” olarak hatırlıyor. Onlara göre bu vahşetin zincirlerini kırabilmek için de tek bir yol vardı o da direnmek veya kendini feda etmek. Tutuklular zincirleri kırmak için mücadele ettiler. 'The Times' gazetesine göre, “dünyanın en kötü şöhretli 10 cezaevi” arasında yer almaktadır. 1981 ve 1984 yılları arasında cezaevinde 34 kişi hayatını kaybetti, onlarca kişi sakat kaldı. Belgesel, cezaevinde yaşananları, direnenleri ve geride bıraktıklarını anlatıyor. “5 no’lu cezaevi: 1980-84″ belgeseli 30 yıl sonra yaşananları tanıkların ve yakınlarının diliyle aktarıyor.

Director Çayan Demirel has turned the events that occurred at diyarbakır prison no.5 during and after the 1980 military coup into a documentary based on eye-witness accounts. many politicians, artists, journalists and academics in turkey were put on trial and then sent to prison during and after the coup. The torture they were subjected to in the prisons has been slowly revealed over the years. diyarbakır prison No.5 holds the most significant place among these prisons. Documentary filmmaker Demirel, decided to contribute to revealing the torture that was carried out in the prison. he made a documentary called “diyarbakır No.5,” which focuses on kurdish prisoners, based on eye-witness accounts.
