Starring Fredric March as former convict Jean Valjean, the film follows the man's journey from thief to mayor to father to revolutionary fighter.Jean Valjean, played by Fredric March, escapes from prison after doing 10 years hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread. Once out of prison, Valjean takes on an assumed name, and the years find him a mayor of a small French town and the adoptive father to a daughter named Cosette, played by Rochelle Hudson. When he is recognized as Valjean by the town's police chief, Inspector Javert, Valjean flees again, going to Paris with his daughter, always with Javert in pursuit. On the eve of the French Revolution, as Cosette is falling in love for the first time, the stage is set for a final showdown between Valjean and Javert.
